Note: There is no class on 4th October as the hall is being used for another workshop. There is no class on 25th October as Debbie is taking a half term break. And on 22nd November, Ross will be taking the class as Debbie is teaching at the ashram in Wales.

This class is specially designed to benefit people who need or choose to adopt a more therapeutic approach to yoga. Therapeutic Yoga does not emphasise adopting and perfecting a particular shape with your body, so you do not have to be fit or flexible to do this class. Indeed, recent research is showing that most joint issues are being caused by over flexibility rather than tight or strong muscles.

Therapeutic Yoga addresses sensory motor amnesia. Most people have some muscles in their bodies that have forgotten how to fire up, and some muscles that have forgotten how to relax. Therapeutic Yoga is a somatic enquiry; inviting you to notice the sensations that you are feeling in your body whilst doing small movements with great attention. If it is appropriate to the people in the room, these movements are often built up into recognisable yoga postures or more complex movement patterns.

By noticing which muscles are firing up enthusiastically, and which muscles are less inclined to engage, we can strengthen what needs to be strengthened, so that the over enthusiastic muscles feel supported in their desire to relax; bringing the body back to a healthy balance.

Suitable for beginners, beneficial for all; especially those with joint issues, muscular imbalances, sleep issues and stress.

The science bit: 

By figuring out how to optimise the ability of our muscles to hold space for our joints, we can balance muscular tensions & increase our body's ability to circulate nutrients & wastes; improving the body-mind's homeostatic ability, so we can find our natural state of balance & heal ourselves.

On a physical level, attention will be given to guiding the body out of fight & flight patterns which release adrenaline & other stress chemicals into the bloodstream, by improving our core & joint support structures, the slow twitch, stabilising muscles that, when activated, release relaxing chemicals into the bloodstream, bringing us into rest & digest mode, which is where the body needs to be to heal.

To this aim we will explore simple but effective postures & gentle repetitive movements, using them to balance muscular tensions by strengthening weak muscles & releasing tight ones.  

Each session starts with a meditation on the breath & concludes with a guided relaxation to release deeply held tensions from your body & mind.

Beneficial everyone, including suffers of muscular back, neck & shoulder problems, hypermobility, mild injury rehabilitation, stress or sleep issues.

Suitable for all levels of experience, fitness & flexibility.
