Intention and Sensation

Having a clear intention about our practice is extremely useful, it helps us notice if we are making progress. Progress is not marked by flexibility or strength; rather it is measured by our capacity to sense accurately what we are doing, and in our ability to open up choice in movement.  This is a largely practical workshop.

Pete Blackaby qualified as an Iyengar teacher in 1986, so his teaching style is firmly rooted in correct postural alignment. In 1987 he started training as an Osteopath. During his training, he became aware of some inconsistencies between the Iyengar & Osteopathic views of structure. At this time he started working with Mary Stewart & exploring the Scaravelli method. The following years have seen Pete merge the best of the 3 into a coherent, intelligent & humanistic approach to yoga. He encourages practice with attentive curiosity, so we can tune into the subtleties of the body.

The body is in a constant state of dialogue with itself. Messages of intention are sent out via the motor nervous system, & sensory signals feedback to modify our movement & tell us how we are getting on. We map the feedback from our muscles tendons & ligaments & develop a sense of where we are in space & how we are moving. Often this map can become a bit skewed, which can lead to unhelpful patterns of movement developing. Yoga can be a wonderful way to reacquaint ourselves with ourselves. Physical mapping is not the only thing mapped in the brain, how we are in the world is also mapped… do we have a realistic representation of the way we are? Do other people see us in the same way we see ourselves? Yoga can slowly help with these things as well.

Pete has just published his book ‘Intelligent Yoga’ & copies will be available to buy on the day. This practical exploration of yoga is suitable for all.
